'I'm fascinated by what happened there,' said Kendall Washington White, associate dean of students at the University of Arizona, who deals with cheating issues at her 37,000-student university.

But others, including some students, called him lazy for relying on a textbook's questions for his exam and foolish for not realizing how easy the test banks are to obtain. Some hailed Quinn as a tough teacher taking a strong stand against cheating. The scandal was featured on 'Good Morning America' and picked up by national education publications. Quinn, who has worked at UCF since 1998, told students the incident made him 'physically ill, absolutely disgusted, completely disillusioned, trying to figure out what was the last 20 years for.' That afternoon, he scrapped a planned talk on mergers and acquisitions and instead told students the midterm had been compromised, some 200 students had cheated by studying from the test bank, and all 600 students in the class would have to take a newly written exam. The UCF instructor, Richard Quinn, made his views known to students in his videotaped Nov. Today's students seem to feel 'less guilty about taking short cuts' to get good grades, he said, and test banks are one of the newest ways students try to get ahead.

About 21 percent of students admit to serious test cheating, with more problems on large campuses and in large lecture classes. Still, McCabe said his surveys on college cheating suggest the problem is serious and perhaps getting worse.

'If they thought they were using it as a study guide, it's hard to argue they were blatantly cheating,' McCabe said Students studying the test bank might not have known the exact questions would be on their midterm. Waldrop said that in the wake of the business class incident, he has put together a 'working group' to suggest ways UCF can improve its existing 'safeguards.'ĭonald McCabe, a business professor at Rutgers University who studies cheating on college campuses, said the UCF case is one of the biggest in recent years but also not clear cut. The students involved committed academic misconduct, but it was an isolated incident at a university regarded as a national leader in the effort to combat cheating, said Provost Tony Waldrop, in a column that appeared in Sunday's Orlando Sentinel.
